James Bartley - eaten by a sperm whale and resurrected

From history there is a myth about an extraordinary incident that happened to the prophet Jonah. Once disobeying God's command to preach among the pagans, Jonah decided to rest :), got on a ship and sailed to Spain instead. During the sea voyage, the ship was overtaken by a terrible storm, and the sailors in fear cast lots to find out for whose sins they had incurred the wrath of God. The lot fell on Jonah, who confessed his sin of disobeying God and asked the sailors to throw him into the sea, which they immediately did, the storm subsided. But the prophet did not drown, Jonah was swallowed by a large fish, in the belly of which he stayed for three days, after which God rescued him.

It is a known fact that the original of the Old Testament was written in Hebrew, while the New Testament was written in Greek. The whale at that time was called "tannin", and the creature that swallowed Jonah was called in the Holy Scriptures "dag", meaning "big fish", "deep-sea monster." Therefore, to this day it has not been found out who actually swallowed the prophet.

Most of the drawings to the myth depict the world's largest whale - blue. It weighs about one and a half hundred tons and reaches over thirty meters in length. But even such a huge animal cannot swallow a person, because it does not have a very large throat.

Most likely, it was a sperm whale. According to experts, he regurgitates the food he has swallowed in huge quantities. There was a case when among the products of regurgitation there was a two hundred kilogram squid of three meters in length. An adult will fit in the throat of such a monster.

Incredibly, a similar story took place not so long ago. It happened in February 1891. The whale hunting vessel ("Star of the East") sailed in the Atlantic Ocean near the Falkand Islands, located six hundred kilometers from Argentina. The search for a long time remained unsuccessful, until a sperm whale appeared in the distance.

In two whaleboats, a team of harpooners went fishing, one of which, seizing the moment, stuck his weapon into the side of the animal. The sperm whale, having received the wound, went berserk. He rushed about, creating a huge wave, jumped up and again fell into the sea. Until a strong blow of the tail blew one of the boats to smithereens. Of the eight victims, only six were pulled out, two were considered dead. The whale disappeared, but the ship still remained in place - the sailors were looking for their comrades.

By the evening of the same day, the same sperm whale was again seen, and soon it was possible to finish it off. The carcass on the deck of the ship was butchered until morning. As they finished cutting out the fat deposits, the sailors saw the animal's stomach twitch in convulsions. A hole was cut with a large knife, which allowed a look inside. Everyone was amazed - there was James Bartley lying motionless, missing the day before while hunting. He was carefully removed from the stomach and transferred to the infirmary. Only a month later, the victim was able to tell about what he had experienced. His story was written down verbatim by the captain of the ship.

Bartley remembered perfectly well when the boat capsized. He was thrown upward, after which darkness fell and the feeling that feet first he was sliding down the channel, the walls of which were convulsively compressed. Bartley was in pitch darkness, it was hot, and the smell was unbearable. Soon the forces left the sailor - he lost consciousness. It turned out that Bartley stayed in the stomach of the animal for about sixteen hours.

Upon the ship's return to England, Bartley once again recounted his story, this time to reporters. And after a while, due to health problems, he was written off to the shore, where his trace was lost. Although the interest of the general public in the incident faded over time, the story of James Bartley was repeatedly returned to by sailors, scientists and writers alike, trying to either find confirmation of this case or refute it.

It is interesting that Bartley's contemporaries, who tried to understand this story several decades later, wrote that such an event took place. The results of their investigations were even published in some newspapers and magazines.

However, modern skeptics use documentary evidence as arguments. As it turned out from the archives, there really was a British ship "Star of the East", and it was indeed in the Falkland Islands area at the indicated time, but it was not a whaling vessel. Moreover, there was never any James Bartley on the list of his team members. Scientists say that a person cannot survive in the stomach of a sperm whale for 16 hours due to the action of gastric juice and lack of oxygen.
